Learn About: Types of Visas for International Students:

There are typically three types of visas in the United States, but for international students, it is either an F-1 or M-1 visa.

(I) F-1 Visa:

It is the most common visa type, especially for academic coursework. In simpler words, it is given to study in USA, whether you choose to study in college or university or if you want to learn English in any English language institute.

 (II) M-1 Visa:

Whereas an M-1 visa is typically for vocational or non-academic programs. Also, if you are getting into a training program in the United States.

Work Opportunities For International Students:

To begin with your academic journey in the USA, it is essential to study the job market in the country you are pursuing and what sort of opportunities are given to international students.

#1 On-Campus Employment:

To balance work and study, on-campus employment works the best. It encourages the students to gain work experience while managing academic commitments. The student must possess F-1 or M-1 visa status to be eligible for on-campus employment. Also, they must adhere to the regulations outlined by the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS).

The following are a few work/non-work study program opportunities that most of the universities in the USA offer:

  1. Teaching Assistant
  2. Library assistant
  3. Research Assistant
  4. Student Ambassador
  5. Tutor
  6. Barista
  7. Bookstore clerk
  8. Receptionist
  9. Administrative worker

NOTE: Please keep in mind that to study in USA you have to work, but there are hour restrictions for international students, which is 20 hours per week.

#2 Off-Campus Employment:

International students in the USA often opt for off-campus employment to experience the real world and to supplement their finances. However, there are two off-campus employment options, which are as follows:

(I) Curricular Practical Training (CPT):

CPT is the USA immigration program where international students holding F-1 visas can get temporary employment directly related to their field. However, in some academic degrees, it is mandatory.

Before undertaking CPT, the students must secure their Designated School Official (DSO) approval. However, to study in the USA, gaining real-world experience to enhance skills and be a valuable asset is better.

(II) Optional Practical Training (OPT):

The Optional Practical Training (OPT) is essential to post-graduate employment. It gives a horizon to international students in the USA to gain practical experience in their field for up to 12 months after completing their academic program.

The application process involves two significant authorities of the USA: (1) a designated school official (DSO) and (2) the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS).

In simpler words, OPT is a bridge that connects academic pursuits and professional growth and enhances the skill set.

#3 Post-Graduation Work Opportunities:

After completing the academic degree, the next step is for international students to be employed in their desired fields. However, many international students need help navigating post-graduation work opportunities. One of the best options for post-graduation work is to opt for Optional Practical Training (OPT).

Moreover, there is another compelling way to get a desired work opportunity, and that is “H-1B Visa.”

H-1B Visa:

It is like a golden door to the numerous work opportunities in the respective field. It allows graduates to work in specialty occupations, often in STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics), sponsored by U.S. employers.

H-1B visa gives an extended work authorization and a pathway to a P.R. (permanent residence). Not only this, but it provides seamless transition from academia to professional roles and gives candidates a competitive edge in the market.
